In 1895 a fire destroyed in stocks of all Samoan stamps except the one shilling value which was then bisected diagonally and used as a 2½d stamp for overseas letters between the 24th of April and May. They were cut diagonally and postmarked in blue. Collectors heard about these and wrote to Samoa asking for them. The post office obliged and these stamps when normally bisected vertically and cancelled with a black hand stamp. Both types of these elusive curiosities are included here.
