Edward Ratcliffe Garth Russel, 1st Baron Mountevans (1880-1957), was second in command of the expedition and the captain of the "Terra Nova". He accompanied Scott to within 160 miles of the Pole, but became seriously ill and survived only through the refusal of his comrades to abandon him. Having spent the summer and autumn of 1912 recuperating and fundraising, Evans returned to New Zealand and arrived back at the Cape named by Scott in his honour aboard the "Terra Nova" on this day.
