A wonderful postcard from the heroic era of Antarctic exploration involving two of the most famous expedition leaders and three of their expeditions. This 1904 Canterbury Times postcard, depicts a gun cotton explosion attempting to break the ice which had trapped Scott's ship the Discovery in 1902. It was posted by Shackleton on his 1907-9 Nimrod expedition, using their special 1d Edward VII Land postage stamp, from Antarctica, to Joseph Kinsey. It was postmarked in Antarctica on 27 February 1908 and carried by the Nimrod back to New Zealand. Kinsey was the New Zealand agent for Shackleton's and Scott's expeditions. Three years later he had the card reposted from Christchurch to Captain Scott's British Antarctic Expedition in 1911 where a 1d Victoria Land stamp issued exclusively for Scott's expedition, was affixed to return the item to Kinsey for a second time. It was posted on 9th February 1911 from Hut Point which was Scott's base, and carried on the Terra Nova. Scott and four of his men subsequently died on this expedition, having reached the South Pole and perished on the return trip. What a magical story surrounding a spectacular survivor from the heroic era of Antarctic exploration. Antarctic pictorial postcards are rarely found used in the Antarctic as they were usually issued after the expedition returned.
